Elephant Stone – “A Morning Song” [MUSIC]

Elephant Stone by Galit RodanPhotography by GALIT RODAN
So I stumbleupon this really cool website today called SoutherSouls.ca based out of southern Ontario run by video editor Mitch Fillion. Branching outside of their Ontario roots a little bit to capture this neighboring Quebec indie group Elephant Stone from Montreal while they were visiting Toronto for their Canadian Music Festival debut. Sit back and drift away to this beautifully mellow track filmed LIVE in Little India, downtown Toronto inside an Indian boutique.

Behind The Board : Gavin Glass [Interview]

Q01 Who are you, What do you do & where are you based?

Gavin Glass. Producer/Musician/Songwriter. Orphan Recording – Harolds Cross.

Q02 What album, track, gig or producer inspired you to end up behind a mixing board

The Band’s “Brown Album” was the record that changed everything for me.

Q03 Where did you study your trade?

I didn’t do a sound course or anything like that, but I was very lucky to have worked with some amazing engineers like Paul Thomas and David Slevin when I was starting out playing in bands, so I learned an awful lot from recording with those guys.

Q04 What advice do you have for any budding engineers out there?

Gazelle – “Chic Afrique” [MUSIC]

Gazelle turns traditional African music on its head, by mixing it with a fusion of funk, disco and electro their product is a mix of synth-pop, natural rhythms, and a wicked baseline. Their modern traditional crossover genre they call LIM POP has left a permanent mark on the African music scene.   Recently Gazelle performed at Cape Town’s International Jazz Festival, and won the Red Bull Soundclash in Durban.  In a recent interview with Mail & Guardian, Nick Matthews (the invisible DJ) explained his music, “We’re taking traditional African instruments and playing styles and mixing it up with something which is from a totally different place. We’re actually playing something that’s not realized yet. We’re trying to create harmony within juxtapositions.”

Young The Giant [MUSIC][ALBUM][VIDEO]

Young The Giant hails from Orange County, CA.  In the last year I have had the pleasure of seeing them twice.  Once at a sold out Roxy on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA and once at a small bar in Boston called Great Scott.  The Great Scott show was their first show of their first headlining tour.  This band is tight, energetic and fun, simple as that.  They usually play this track at the end of their shows but I think this will wet your whistle as we get into their self titled debut record.

My Body – Young The Giant

The soaring vocals of Sameer Gadhia with a band of young, but very diverse musicians create an awesome sound that is danceable, eclectic and loud.   The band has been playing together in different outfits since high school and are well seasoned playing live in LA and around Southern California.  This new record is solid musically and I their ability to grab attention is easy.  “Apartment” is my favorite track on the record.

Apartment – Young The Giant

The band’s members range in age from 21 to 23. Comprised of Gadhia on lead vocals with guitarist Jacob Tilley, Eric Cannata on guitar and backing vocals with Payam Doostzadeh holding it down on bass and drummer/ backing vocalist Francois Comtois they used to be known locally and in some circles nationally as the Jakes, but as the grew into writing music full time Young The Giant wanting to go under a new moniker with a fresh start.  One tune they carried over from their “Jakes” days is called “Cough Syrup.”

Cough Syrup – Young the Giant

Having opened for the likes of Kings of Leon and The Whigs, Young the Giant is finishing up an American tour through April and then they head over seas only to come back to play the Sasquatch Festival up in Washington State at the end of May.  No other dates are posted on their site yet.

Last year they played open sessions where they performed live in different outdoor settings and a bunch of awesome live videos became the result.  One of the best songs to come out of that is called “I Got”.

I Got – Young The Giant

Young the Giant’s debut self titled record is available here.

Their tour page is here.  Their youtube page is here and you can follow the band on facebook here.

Here’s one last track from their recent release.

Burial – “EGO” feat. Thom Yorke and Four Tet [MUSIC]

burial

Soooo glad I ran into this track here. Thom Yorke of Radiohead teams up with UK 2-step/grudge producer Burial, and Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet, on a new project released this month. Definitely going for that club sound on this track with the laid back house beat being melodically guided by the easily recognized vocals of Thom Yorke. Once you’ve had about 10 listens of this hit visit here for the other release entitled, “Mirror”.

Laurie Levine – “Kites” [VIDEO]

Laurie Levine has a soulful jazzy voice that is reinventing the folk music scene throughout South Africa.  Based in Johannesburg, she has played at venues across South Africa, and has started touring internationally.  In 2010 she was nominated for a South African Music Award and is steadily growing a larger fan base.  Expect great things from this artist in the future, check out “Kites” a beautiful song from her  most recent album, Living Room.
