Young The Giant [MUSIC][ALBUM][VIDEO]

Young The Giant hails from Orange County, CA.  In the last year I have had the pleasure of seeing them twice.  Once at a sold out Roxy on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, CA and once at a small bar in Boston called Great Scott.  The Great Scott show was their first show of their first headlining tour.  This band is tight, energetic and fun, simple as that.  They usually play this track at the end of their shows but I think this will wet your whistle as we get into their self titled debut record.

My Body – Young The Giant

The soaring vocals of Sameer Gadhia with a band of young, but very diverse musicians create an awesome sound that is danceable, eclectic and loud.   The band has been playing together in different outfits since high school and are well seasoned playing live in LA and around Southern California.  This new record is solid musically and I their ability to grab attention is easy.  “Apartment” is my favorite track on the record.

Apartment – Young The Giant

The band’s members range in age from 21 to 23. Comprised of Gadhia on lead vocals with guitarist Jacob Tilley, Eric Cannata on guitar and backing vocals with Payam Doostzadeh holding it down on bass and drummer/ backing vocalist Francois Comtois they used to be known locally and in some circles nationally as the Jakes, but as the grew into writing music full time Young The Giant wanting to go under a new moniker with a fresh start.  One tune they carried over from their “Jakes” days is called “Cough Syrup.”

Cough Syrup – Young the Giant

Having opened for the likes of Kings of Leon and The Whigs, Young the Giant is finishing up an American tour through April and then they head over seas only to come back to play the Sasquatch Festival up in Washington State at the end of May.  No other dates are posted on their site yet.

Last year they played open sessions where they performed live in different outdoor settings and a bunch of awesome live videos became the result.  One of the best songs to come out of that is called “I Got”.

I Got – Young The Giant

Truth and Salvage Co. [MUSIC]

I think it’s safe to say LA has an extremely diverse music scene.  That’s pretty much a no brainer.  It’s also a place where musicians from all walks of life and musical tendencies can come/ meet up and create something like Truth and Salvage Co.  They are comprised of six members with four lead vocalists who are all also song writers.  Sounds like a creative control nightmare, but they have recently release a self titled record and its really good.  Interesting…

Hail Hail – Truth and Salvage Co.

The members of Truth and Salvage Co. hail from the southeast and midwest part of the country.  They met in LA emerging from the famed Hotel Cafe and the popular/ crowded singer songwriter scene.  No doubt about it, they draw from country and southern rock.  That made me quiver a little bit when a friend told me to check them out.  This band definitely has their fair share of country sounding tracks, but when you make the transition from that part of the country to LA and are influenced by such powerhouses as Tom Petty and The Eagles the blend of country and rock can be delicious.

This record does it for me.  Maybe it’s the LA themed lyrics that remind me of why I love living here or the fact that its just easy to listen to.  So with that said here another track off thier self titled debut.  It’s a little bit country and a good example of the LA theme throughout the record (hence the title), but I think you’ll like it.

Welcome to LA – Truth and Salvage Co.

Ok fine it was pretty much hard core country.  But hey a little Southern rock isn’t necessarily a bad thing sometimes.  My favorite track on the record is called Rise Up.  It’s a much bigger sounding tune and arguably the best one on the record.

Rise Up – Truth and Salvage Co.

Truth and Salvage Co are on tour and you can buy their self titled album here.

I never thought I’d find myself gushing over this kind of music.  It’s just not my thing, but the record as a whole is a tribute to the sounds of LA past just maybe not Gun’s n’ Roses or Motley Crue.   Truth and Salvage Co. definitely bring a classic rock and roll heart.  I love the band and I love the record.  I guess even the most die hard country and southern rock haters can be converted.  Here’s one last gem.

See Her – Truth and Salvage Co.

Truth and Salvage Co. are playing the famous Troubadour in LA tonight (March 18th, 2011).  I will be there and you should be too.

The Antlers – Two [VIDEO]

Pretty cool video here by The Antlers. It reminds me a lot of the South Park animations. Please check out more of their music and get the FREE Download of this EP, ‘NEW YORK HOSPITALS’

The Tallest Man On Earth – “King Of Spain” [MUSIC]

We are currently seeing all kinds of extraordinary indie groups coming out of Sweden. Just came across these guys today through a facebook news feed. The Tallest Man On Earth with one of their hit tracks, “King Of Spain”. Please click the image above to visit their site.

Racer X – Scarified [VIDEO]

First off, this group is filled with intense amounts of talent including Paul Gilbert, on guitar (Rated 4th in GuitarOne magazine, “Top 10 Greatest Guitar Shedders of All Time”), Juan Alderete of The Mars Volta, and speed-demon Marco Minnemann on the drums. These guitar riffs and fills bring a classical composition to this heavy metal tone which represents Racer X. This is an amazing track by Paul and you have to love the space suits, lol.

Clones Of The Queen – ‘Gates’ [DOWNLOAD]

Just stumbledupon this one last week by Clones Of The Queen. This group is absolutely overflowing with creativity, as they blend heavy bass backgrounds with unique rock guitar riffs, producing a sound that will really have you wondering what genre you’re really listening to. Please enjoy these two tracks off of the new EP and please visit their site to download this album for free, or show some love and keep the music going by donating $5 for the album. Enjoy:

The Beat-Play Radio [Update]

Beat-Play is the first social radio app on Facebook - in internal beta now - the picture above shows Beat-Play still in progress

Beat-Play is a Facebook Radio App, launching in a few months, where you will “follow” people who you share a taste in music with (friends, favorite artists, family, etc). The songs that they like enough to actually save into their playlists, automatically get sent to your radio. If you like a song enough to save, it automatically gets sent to anybody following you.

This creates a viral spread of the music unlike anything seen before in music. It will completely level out the playing field, insuring that if the music is good enough to spread, it will. Beat-Play is completely devoted to helping independent artists create sustainable careers with their music.

A couple of other great benefits of Beat-Play:

  • It’s a FREE form of promotion and distribution for artists – and we believe it will be more efficient
  • It’s an incredibly easier way for fans to find and share music
  • It operates using free streams – free music for the fans!
  • Artists can get paid based off of plays, not sales, by generating ad revenue from their popularity. (more info)
  • Beat-Play uses “Piracy,” or music sharing, as a driving force for artist revenue instead of an opposing  force for it
  • Artists maintain full control over their music, their rights, and even the price of their ad space, and they never have to sign away a thing.
  • There’s no risk to try it

We are currently looking for more awesome music and artists to add to our app’s music library so that there can be music on the player when we launch officially, on Jan 31st 2011. If you would  like us to put your music on our radio app, please email our Customer Relations Director at Kian@musicwithoutlabels.com, and please include information about how to obtain your music in mp3 format.

We’re getting really excited about this, and it’s coming along beautifully!  We hope to hear from you!

Introducing… Said The Whale [MUSIC]

Indie rock band out of Vancouver, Said The Whale comes with a really fun energy with “Camilo (The Magician)”. Here is their video:

How to Make a Contact Mic (Piezo Pick-up) for under $10

Whether you want create noise music by banging on scrap metal, cheaply and easily amplify your acoustic instrument, or just play with wires, you’re in the right place. You will need:

  • piezo transducer (radioshack 273-073A)
  • 1/4″ audio cable (eg radioshack 42-2381A)
  • tape, solder, hot glue, heat shrink tubing, etc

That’s all! It’s pretty simple an inexpensive: two piezos and a six foot cable cost me ten dollars and yield two mics. You also probably going to use pliers, a razor blade, and a soldering iron or hot glue gun if you have them. Kids, we’re playing with things that are hot and sharp, so don’t tell your parents or they’ll get all up in your shit.

Full Tutorial Here

When you hook these piezo mics up to a good amp they can sound really good. It’s because they have a much wider pickup range than most guitar pick-ups so you get some great highs and lows. If you have a guitar you should definitely watch this video:

MysteryGuitarMan – Stop-Motion Guitar Symphony [VIDEO]

I absolutely love how he acts like he doesn’t know how to play guitar at all in the beginning. What an awesome concept for song composition. Well played.
