The Orphan, The Poet – “Invincible” [VIDEO]

Narrative: A man searches for a lost love.

Performance: The band plays in a brown room.

Song: Big, sweeping, blah.

Why You Should Watch It:  The earth tone/dirt/mud color scheme and song blend together into a muddy swirl of “meh” for me.  Blame the genre, I don’t love the Saosin post-hardcore stuff – though the production here’s pristine.  What I really want to feature with this video is the band’s performance.  Conceptually it’s nothing special, but visually it’s such a change of pace from the usual high energy, quick cutting, handheld feel that usually accompanies smaller bands’ performances.

Here, by staging the band in seats to start, the director builds a tension that releases when the lead singer springs to his feet at 2:07.  When the rest of the band follows at 3:41, we can see how tight they are as a unit.  The camera points it out; lingering in long, slow dolly shots.  These guys play with energy, with passion and with precision.

Good on them.  So many bands with flashy videos don’t even bother to get that right.

The Drums – Best Friend [VIDEO]

The Drums

An extremely catchy tune from this Brooklyn based New York City band. Here is another collaboration with the Black XS Live Take Away Shows set in the streets of Paris outside of a costume store front. The lead singers high vocal range melodically leverages the rhythms of the drums and guitar. Here is “Best Friend” performed live and please take time to see some more by The Drums here.

Atomic Tom Performing on a Subway Train. With iPhones? [VIDEO]

If you haven’t seen the instruments apps on your iPhone, here is a great way to see how they can become quite useful. Atomic Tom had lost their instruments so they planned for this show on a subway. They apparently took a bit over 3 months to prepare for this showdown but I would definitely say they nailed it. Who knew your iPhone could make such awesome music with above par sound quality? Can’t wait to see the next level this video takes musical innovation for the near future.

The Coolest Instrument Ever – The Hang – Dante Bucci ripping it up!

The Hang  (pronounced like Hung, sometimes called the Hang Drum) is a UFO shaped steel instrument with different dents that create different sounds when hit. They are made in Switzerland, and are pretty rare to find and are apparently pretty expensive as well. I hear that you have to know someone who knows someone to get one. They are usually hand made. What I wouldn’t do to get my hands on one. This is an incredibly versatile instrument in the way it can be played. It is not always just drummed on, but can produce a number of really interesting sounds depending on how you hit it (like knocking on it). The reverberation of this instrument also makes for an amazing ambiance. Dante Bucci destroys this performance. He really does the instrument justice. Check it out!

Amma Johnson Performs Live – Amazing Voice!

I love Amma Johnson. She is one of my favorite independent artists, especially because of the message she carries in each of her songs.

This video is particularly inspiring, as she dedicates her song “Finally Free” to her 2 friends who have been clean and off drugs for several years. It’s a very emotional video, in a great way, and Amma’s voice is AMAZING. Hope you enjoyed!

MusicWithoutLabel.com’s Weekly Indie Artist Review

Band Name:

Apex Vibe

Album Title:

Rhythm Music

Band Members and Positions:

Tim Sanchez (Vocals/Guitar)

Chris Howells (Guitar/Backing)

Sam Caudill (Keys/Backing Vocals)

Will Lovell (Bass/Backing Vocals)

Dubs (Drums)

Genre:

Reggae / Hip-Hop

Record Label:

Independent

Difficulty of Music:

Apex Vibe applies very catchy verses along with smooth transitioning into their chorus and solos. The difficulty in the verses is fairly simple while still raising the bar a bit with the transitions and solos.

Comparisons to Other Artists:

Apex Vibe would be most compared to Sublime and 311, with a touch of The Roots within their beats.

Lyrical Significance:

The lyrics used in this album are very up beat and positive, making it nearly impossible not to sing along.

Overall Rating (out of 10):

I would give Rhythm Music an 8 out of 10.

Analysis:

This album is very well constructed but lacking in the track list given the fact that there are only four songs on the entire album. From their perspective it is a decent idea to focus on making four very well written tracks rather than having a 10 or 15 track album and only have a few actually good songs. However plans for a full album are in the works and production is set to start soon. More info about the new full album will be updated as we receive it.
