Moon Taxi at Live on the Green in Nashville, TN [SHOW/NEW MUSIC]

It’s gotta be a good night when your band gets to open up for Robert Randolf and the Family Band.  That was the case last Thursday night for Moon Taxi when they played at Live on the Green in Nashville, TN.  As a new listener and one of many people there to see the best pedal steel player in the world, I couldn’t help taking an immediate interest to Moon Taxi.  This is a phenomenal rock band with an incredible musician on every instrument, and they can’t help it that they play awesome music.  If you like Music Without Labels, check out this “music without borders” that is Moon Taxi.  Here’s a live video of Moon Taxi opening up for Matisyahu at the Fillmore two years ago.

This video was shot just months after the release of Moon Taxi’s Live album called Live Ride that they recorded in their hometown of Nashville, TN.   Dirty bass lines, tight drum grooves, killer guitar riffs, and slick organ sounds seem to provide the perfect foundation for great vocals and memorable lyrics.  Moon Taxi’s sound has since developed with a couple years of touring, and they are sounding better than ever.  Their feel reminded me of Rush with their synced riffs and occasional odd meter grooves, but they have made those concepts their own.  Their music somehow combines qualities of many different bands and artists.  However, Moon Taxi is their own element, and have completely developed their own incredible distinct sound.  Here’s a video of Moon Taxi playing one of their songs called All the Rage.

Moon Taxi toured last year with Matisyahu, which has opened up bigger opportunities for the band and their music.  They have also opened for acts such as Umphrey’s Mcgee, Gov’t Mule, the New Mastersounds, and DJ Logic.  Moon Taxi has played at a number of music festivals including the 10,000 Lakes Festival, Moe’s Summer Camp, Birmingham’s City Stages, the Terrapin Hill Harvest Festival, and Huntsville’s Big Spring Jam.  Moon Taxi will be playing Southern Ground Music Fest with Zac Brown Band and My Morning Jacket in Charleston, SC next month as part of their nationwide headlining tour!

Their show on Thursday was awesome, and I got way more than what I expected.  Moon Taxi is a modern-day version of the classic jam band, which is why they are such a great band to see live.  They have combined valuable musical assets of their influences and created something fresh.  This is why they have been described as a band interested in “music without borders.”  Their music is undoubtedly progressive, but they stay true to their musical niche.  But wait! There’s more!  Moon Taxi is getting ready to release new music, so check out this video and listen to this sick new track called “Cabaret” from their new album.

Strive Roots Opens for War – Downtown San Diego

This Friday, Sept, 23rd, the incredibly talented band Strive Roots is opening up for classic funk band War. If you’ve never heard of Strive Roots, let this video recorded by MusicWithoutLabels at last year’s THC Music Fest, give you your first taste. Eli (lead guitar) does something with the guitar I’ve never seen ANYONE ever do. I still can’t figure out how he does it. Check it out:

With tunes like that, and one of my favorites, Communicate: along with a whole slur of new material, this show is going to be ridiculous! If you’re in Southern Cali, and you like to dance and jam the f*k out, you’re definitely going to want to catch this. Tickets are on sale here, or you can email Eli directly at eli@striveroots.com, and maybe he’ll hook you up!

Strive Roots also plays tonight at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood at 11:30 pm. If you don’t happen to be in town, you can check out all that Strive Roots has to offer at striveroots.com or on Facebook. This band is seriously going to blow up soon, unquestioned. Don’t miss em!

Ground Up – “The Road I Travel” – Sick Jam Band!

“The Road I Travel”

Denver, Colorado is known as a feel good city and what better goes with a feel good city then some feel good music. The type of music, that makes you want to get up out of your seat and groove to the rhythms that set your soul free. This, my friends, is what Ground Up delivers at each one of their unique and energetic jam band filled shows.

Home grown in Denver, Colorado, Ground Up is a four-piece band that has been artistically molded by its environment. Most people say that we are a product of our environment, and in this case, Ground Up is that particular product that is flying off the shelf like the new G.I. Joe with the kung-fu grip.

Gravity – Band Review – Electronica/Funk/Awesomeness

The Electronica/Trip Hop/Funk band Gravity out of Denver, Co is a MUST see live, however if you can’t get out to the Mile High City just yet, hearing their stuff online is just as satisfying..almost.

Members:

Brian Cornell – Keys

Mark Cooley – Guitar / Live Production

Moe Valez – Bass / Synth Bass

Tynan Olsen – Drums

One of the reasons I like Gravity so much is their experimental nature. They play around with a number of different genres and like to blend them together to form something completely different. The result is an energy-packed feel good explosion that will have you head bumping all day.

These guys are on the cutting edge for sure. One could easily describe their sound as electro-funk, but then I think they’d be missing out on the bigger picture. Their music ultimately represents a higher form of creative expression that is something all it’s own. It is really an awesome experience that I recommend everyone check out. This band is ILL!

You can find Gravity’s tour schedule here. Also look out for Gravity’s upcoming EP entitled Fire Sermon. It will be available for free sometime in the coming weeks. You will be able to download it for FREE on their website and you can stay updated by liking them on their Facebook page.

Here’s a sneak peak track off of their upcoming EP. This track is called Virga, which means an observable streak of precipitation that falls from a cloud but evaporates before reaching the ground. This track is disgusting!

They call their genre Mountain-Dance..that’s a perfect description. Sit back, enjoy and smoke a J!
